Hiring a moving company is one of the most common actions taken by people that have to relocate. But unless you know how to properly approach this situation and follow the right steps, there are a score of things that could go wrong and cause you more stress than is necessary.
The following do's and don’ts will increase your chances of having a positive experience, especially when it comes to dealing with long distance moving companies.
Do: Check for a DOT Number
DOT is short for “Department of Transportation.” Having a DOT number available makes it easy for customers to find out if a particular mover company is insured. All they have to do is enter the number onto the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s SAFER (Safety and Fitness Electronic Records) system website or they can call the special DOT help line to check for company complaints.
According to the Safersys.org website, the SAFER system’s goal is to provide the public with online information about a company’s safety data, including a detailed electronic record of the company’s identification, size, safety record, safety rating, cash information and commodity information.
Don’t: Fall for a Moving Scam
Unfortunately, there are many mover companies that are not properly licensed/insured or follow the proper industry protocol and regulations. According to MovingScam.com, it is essential for consumers to know how to spot a scam and take action by filing a report with the local police, as well as filing official complaints via the DOT and FMCSA (Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration) websites.
Do: Ask for Details
One of the most important questions to ask a potential moving company is if they handle their moves directly or if they hire subcontractors to perform the services. If it is the latter, press them to find out the name of the subcontractor, business location and contact number. Use this information to find out if the subcontractor is legit and reputable.
Don’t: Hire a Mover Company Without Knowing Their Process & Fees
While rates for hiring mover companies do vary, it is a good idea to find out exactly what services your money will be paying for. Find out how the company plans on conducting the move so that you’re aware of their methods and any risks that may be present. For example, according to AllState.com, if your situation requires special accommodations, such as using a semi truck for the bulk of the drive, then switching to a smaller truck to move your belongings within city limits, this could mean higher costs and more risk of damaging your things.
Never underestimate the power of a personal referral from family, friends or coworkers. It is often easier to hire a mover company that you know has provided services to people you know and trust. However, this doesn’t mean you shouldn’t still check out the credibility and reputation of the company. It’s best to cover all your bases in the beginning, even if the company was referred to you.
